There are over 50 billion injections given each year, and in the developing world over half are made with re-used or unsterile syringes. Rather than safely delivering medication, this cross-infects patients with serious blood-bourne diseases like HIV and Hepatitis. In fact, the World Health Organisation estimates that syringes are used on average seven times in developing countries, and this creates tens of millions of infections every year.*
